Alfredo Manuel Franco Pereira is a Full Professor of Animal Science in the Department of Animal Science at the School of Sciences and Technology of the University of Évora and an integrated researcher at MED – Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development, where he is a member of the Animal Bioscience Group. He holds a degree in Animal Science Engineering from the University of Évora, a master’s degree in Tropical Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, and a PhD in Agricultural Sciences – Animal Bioclimatology, as well as a Habilitation in Veterinary Sciences. His research focuses on animal bioclimatology, adaptive physiology and behaviour, and thermoregulation, with particular emphasis on the mechanisms underlying ruminants’ adaptation to hot environments and their resilience to climate change. He maintains a scientific collaboration with the Faculty of Animal Science and Food Engineering at the University of São Paulo, where he is a Visiting Professor and is affiliated with the Laboratory of Biometeorology and Ethology. He is responsible for the Monte do Pasto Chair in Animal Welfare at the University of Évora and is a Curator Member of the Brazilian Society of Biometeorology. His scientific activity combines fundamental and applied research, advanced training and knowledge transfer to the livestock sector, covering topics such as animal adaptation to climatic conditions, animal welfare and the sustainability of ruminant production systems. He is currently leading the European project SheepHeatIT – Harnessing Information Technologies for Heat-Resilient Sheep Breeding, which focuses on studying and promoting heat resilience in sheep. His scientific output includes articles in international journals, books, and book chapters on thermoregulation, animal adaptation, heat stress, and the welfare of cattle, sheep, and buffaloes.
