MED Projects | TransforMed – 4th General Meeting
The 4th general meeting of the TransforMed project took place in Vic, Spain, from 29 September to 1 October 2026. It was hosted by the BETA Tech. Centre, from the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC), which coordinates the project. TransforMed aims to support the large-scale adoption of agroforestry systems (AFS) in saline and degraded areas of Morocco, Tunisia and Türkiye.
Within the project, the MED team, led by the researcher Helena Guimarães, works on the policies needed to encourage farmers and land managers to adopt AFS. Building on experience gained in the Montado through initiatives such as Gestão do Montado por Resultados and the Tertúlias do Montado platform, the team’s main goal is to develop results-based models (RBMs) adapted to each local context.
At the meeting, MED researcher Catarina Isidoro presented the progress of this work. The first phase is now complete, with the characterisation of the national contexts in the three countries and identification where an RBM could fit in. Building on these results, Elsa El Housseini, a master’s student at CIHEAM Montpellier doing her internship at the University of Évora, is preparing a scientific article that summarises the findings common to the three countries.
In Morocco, Aya Hussien, who is also an intern from the same programme, developed a first draft for RBM with the local partners AGENDA and Andzoa. In Tunisia, CAPTE ran a participatory territorial game with the local community to build a shared vision and define the environmental results to be achieved. In Türkiye, DKM and BDIARI are applying the same approach.
Next, the team will validate the proposed models with local stakeholders and refine them to suit each country.
