About us

LABscape has consolidated progressively its position as a research team since 2002 – and continues constantly evolving. We are part of MED- Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development (https://www.med.uevora.pt/), at the University of Évora, and of the Associated Lab CHANGE – Global Change and Sustainability Institute, which brings together teams of researchers from the Universities of Évora, Nova de Lisboa, Lisboa and Açores.

We focus on rural landscapes in the Mediterranean and their complex processes or change, from natural resources to human activities and communities: how they change, why they change, where they are likely heading, what is gained and what is lost, how they can be most effectively and sustainably managed and governed. We adopt a systemic approach and we are deeply interdisciplinary. We sustain that by combining multiple disciplines in our projects, methods, and everyday discussions, our joint work leads to a more complete understanding of the complex and uncertain world around us and strengthens our adaptive capacity as researchers. Interdisciplinarity therefore defines our uniqueness and strength as an obvious source of innovation for formulating research questions and devising pathways towards sustainability.

We are an internationally competitive team of 12 experienced post-docs and associated junior researchers. We have been involved in a number of European projects, including eight H2020 projects, and are currently engaged in three Horizon Europe, two LIFE +, one PRIMA section 1 and one PRIMA section 2, among others, at levels ranging from the EU (ERASMUS +, MSCA-Marie Curie) to the National, regional and local levels (FCT, Regional Directories and Local Councils). We are part of national and European scientific advisory boards. We bring together expertise in rural geography and planning, policy assessment, remote sensing, spatial analysis and modelling, landscape ecology and engineering, soil degradation and restoration, socio-metabolic research, governance, innovation mechanisms and transdisciplinary processes of knowledge co-construction.

Besides research, we are a key triggering platform for social and institutional innovation in our region, bridging over to the national and international (EU and pan-Mediterranean) levels. We have a capital of trust materialized as relations with multiple stakeholders at local, regional, national and European levels. Effectively engaging these stakeholders is a key element of all our applied research. Our ambition is to support and inform evidence-based decision making by private companies and the public administration.

MOVING: Mountain Valorization through Interconnectedness and Green Growth

DESCRIPTION:

European mountain areas play a central role in the well-being of many highly populated European regions. The big question is how these mountain areas are being impacted by climate change. The EU-funded MOVING project will build capacities and co-develop policy frameworks across Europe. It will establish new or upscaled value chains to boost resilience and sustainability of mountain areas. The first step will be to screen traditional and emerging value chains in all European mountain areas. The next step will involve in-depth assessment of vulnerability and resilience of land use, production systems and value chains in 23 mountain regions. The project will use a virtual research environment to promote online interactions amongst actors and new tools to ensure information is accessible by different audiences.

SUSTAINOLIVE: Novel approaches to promote the SUSTAInability of OLIVE cultivation in the Mediterranean

DESCRIPTION:

Europe concentrates approximately 70% of world olive oil production. Tunisia and Morocco contribute 10% of world production. In total, 7.7 million hectares are accounted for in the Mediterranean basin. Therefore, olive cultivation is the backbone of the socio-economic and cultural life of many regions in the Mediterranean basin. The overall objective of SUSTAINOLIVE is to enhance the sustainability of the olive oil farming sector throughout the implementation and promotion of a set of innovative sustainable management solutions that are based on agro-ecological concepts, and on the exchange of knowledge and co-creation involving multiple actors and end-users.

FIREPOCTEP: Strengthening cross-border systems for preventing and extinguishing forest fires and improving resources for rural employment creation post-Covid-19

DESCRIPTION:

The FIREPOCTEP project falls under Thematic Objective 5 of the POCTEP Programme: Promoting adaptation to climate change in all sectors. In addition, it seeks to respond to the investment priority, in relation to the POCTEP Programme, 5B: Fostering investment to address specific risks and ensure adaptation to disasters and the development of disaster management systems. FIREPOCTEP seeks to foster the development of common approaches between cross-border regions, allowing the strengthening of forest fire prevention and extinction systems in both countries and the improvement of resources for rural employment creation in the face of the Covid-19 health crisis. Its objectives are: 1) Identify Strategic Management Areas to minimize the risk and effects of large rural fires through integrated landscape management considering climate change; 2) Encourage public and private investment through pilot experiences in the framework of Circular Green Economy and research of new market opportunities; 3) Raise awareness of the rural population on the risk of large forest fires, as well as on good prevention practices and self-protection. To train and equip the resources employed in rural fire management systems in both countries.

CILIFO: Forest Fire Fighting and Research Iberian Centre

DESCRIPTION: 

The Iberian Centre for Research and Fighting Forest Fires (CILIFO) is 75% funded by the Interreg VA Spain - Portugal - POCTEP (2014-2020) Cross-border Cooperation Programme. The project's central objectives are: 1) To reinforce and combine cooperation, working procedures and training between forest fire prevention and extinction devices in the cooperation area of the Euroregion Alentejo - Algarve - Andalusia; 2) To promote the creation of lasting and quality jobs in the area; 3) To reduce the economic cost of fires, creating a rural economy linked to the landscape; 4) To improve the response capacity to forest fires of the administrations and authorities engaged in prevention and extinction systems in the three regions involved.

FUEL-SAT: Integrating data from different satellites to map forest fuels: the role of remote sensing for effective forest fuels management

DESCRIPTION:

Besides climatic conditions and topography, fire behaviour is highly dependent on the amount and distribution (vertical and horizontal) of the available fuel, which in turn is associated with the main vegetation characteristics, such as type, structure and moisture content. Thus, fuel characterization and classification are recognized as one of the most important factors that should be taken into consideration for fire prevention and pre-fire planning. Remote sensing and satellite data are advanced technology capable of measuring, mapping and monitoring how, when and where forest fuels are most likely to burn, in an effective, synoptic, systematic and consistent manner. Spatial information from fuel models can be generated from an integration of satellite data from various sources, including optical, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) information, to overcome known limitations when only optical data is used. Despite the general consensus that the fire problem is a national priority, no study has been carried out in Portugal involving a multi-source satellite approach to generate variables related to combustible vegetation. This approach, consists in a crucial step to produce information and build an operational tool for decision support in fire prevention and planning. Thus, the overall objective of the project is to develop and test a methodology to integrate satellite data from various sources to improve the estimation and mapping of forest fuels in the central region of mainland Portugal. Specifically, the project has three main objectives: (i) to estimate based on ICESat-2 data key variables related to combustible vegetation (Canopy Height (AC), Canopy Cover (CC), Canopy Base Height (ABC), Bush Height (AM), Bush Cover (CM), "Canopy Bulk Density (CBD)), considering the nature of complexity of the fuel types related to fires in Portugal; ii) extrapolating the variables AC, CC, ABC, AM, CM and CBD calculated on the basis of ICESat-2 data to areas where no such information exists due to lack of sensor coverage, integrating information from several remote sensing data sources (Sentinel-1, PALSAR- 2, Sentinel-2 and SRTM); and iii) evaluating the impact of using spatially continuous information on structural variables related to fuels in the definition of priority areas for fuel management.

OLEADAPT: Pest Management Strategy for the Resilience and Sustainability of Olive Growing in the Face of Climate Change

DESCRIPTION:

Climate change poses a major challenge to agriculture. Even if the goal of keeping warming below 2.0°C is achieved, almost all global agricultural land will continue to experience changes in local climate over the coming decades. Knowing that crop yields and quality may decrease under new temperature and precipitation regimes has therefore become a major global concern. The overall objective of the proposed research agenda, OLEAdapt, is to provide a climate-smart pest management strategy for the cultivation of the olive tree (Olea europaea var. europaea), one of the most widespread and economically relevant crops in mainland Portugal. This strategy will focus on exploiting the climate-related phenotypic diversity - or climatic diversity - currently present in O. europaea, and how this diversity can be best exploited for climate change adaptation. To achieve this challenging goal, OLEAdapt will conduct an ecological and economic assessment at a scale of detail of the impacts of climate change on the abundance and incidence of a major pest of the olive tree (Bactrocera oleae), combining climate projections with management strategies based on biocontrol services provided to bats to suggest varieties that maximize owner objectives. Overall, OLEAdapt will help the olive and olive oil industry to better adapt to ongoing climate change.

EROFIRE: Post-fire erosion risk assessment using molecular markers

DESCRIPTION:

Fire negatively affects soil health and quality, favouring the occurrence of erosive processes and their loss. This impact on soils is intensified by global warming, which exacerbates the risk of wildfires. Consequently, new forms of carbon (C) are produced in the soil, also occurring thermal modifications in previously existing forms of carbon. These modifications lead to the formation of substances with weak colloidal properties (increasing run-off rates) and greater resistance to chemical and biological degradation (non-proliferation of micro-organisms). However, the effects of fire on soils can be reversed. After fire, soil properties naturally return to their original state; the rate of erosion is reduced, and soil functionality is again achieved. Therefore, early detection of soil recovery and the effectiveness of recovery actions is important in decision making and planning future strategies to be adopted after forest fires. Traditionally, the assessment of the degree of soil recovery is done by visual inspection, taking into account the speed and recovery of vegetation cover in the area affected by fire. However, no attention has been paid to the quantity and quality (chemical composition) of the soil, which can provide better and more accurate information about the degree of recovery. Therefore, it is of vital importance to identify biogeochemical markers associated with soil susceptibility to external agents and its ability to recover and that can be related to spatially explicit and easily determined indicators in order to allow upscaling. The main objectives of the proposed project are: i) to establish a post-fire performance model based on the risk of soil loss and its quality, and ii) the development of a tool to monitor soil recovery. The project proposes a multidisciplinary approach to the study of soils affected by fire that allows us to obtain precise information regarding the processes involved in the loss of soil cohesion and increasing erosion, as well as the changes that lead to the recovery of the functionality of soils affected by fire.

Assessing the usefulness of ICESat-2 data for wildland fuel mapping

DESCRIPTION:

Recent studies have suggested that fire regimes will be altered as a response to climate change, resulting in an increased frequency and intensity of wildfires in areas already fire-prone, as well as an increase in susceptible areas. In this context, the projected weather conditions for the Mediterranean region, associated with the existing vegetation, will favor higher wildfire frequency and severity. In Portugal, catastrophic consequences of these extreme circumstances have already been observed in 2003, 2005, and 2017, with the occurrence of large wildfires causing extensive economic, environmental and human losses. In 2017, Portugal had suffered a record number of devastating wildfires, which burned an area of 539 920 ha of forests, shrublands and agricultural land causing 117 deaths. This situation clearly imposes an urgent need for a more sustainable coexistence with fire by promoting the adaptation of fire management policies to the new fire regimes. To better support fire and fuel management decisions is vital the development of an effective spatial information systems, namely with remote sensing-based methodologies, to generate accurate and timely information of fuel-related variables. In Portugal the lack of accurate and high resolution maps representing key-fuel related variables at a national scale has been conditioning the implementation of an effective decision-making process regarding fire prevention and planning. As such, this project intends to develop and test a multi-source satellite approach for mapping fuel-related variables. In particular, the project will focus on the assessment of the main capabilities of a space-borne LiDAR system (ICESat-2) in retrieving vegetation height and vertical structure information, as it is critical for fire simulators.

Tertúlias do Montado

DESCRIPTION:

Tertulias do Montado is an initiative of the Institute of Agrarian and Environmental Sciences (ICAAM) of the University of Évora which aims to create a regular and structured dialogue between the various stakeholders involved in the study, management and use of the Montado. Thus, the tertúlias are prepared based on participative methodologies in which the general objectives are: 1) creation of a cohesive group of participants, 2) integration of different types of knowledge and interests, 3) contribute to the environmental, social and economic sustainability of the Alentejo.

Two researcher positions at the level of PhD and MsC (ideally to develop PhD) in the framework of SOLVO project (SOLVO - Solutions to restore degraded Soils in mediterranean OLive orchards Via Organic mulch and biochar from olive industry waste).
